Flash of Genius, 2002
As in most of our public works the core of the idea relates to the site's social function. What is the context and how does our work of art add to this situation? The site of the Nacka Cultural House, in the vicinity of Stockholm, is a vibrant and active meeting point of diverse cultural activities. A library, art hall, theatre, cinema and a restaurant are connected under the high ceiling of a former factory for heavy machinery. One of the answers to what a cultural center like this produces is - ideas. And our sculpture “Flash of genius” is a basic representation of this product. It consists of a giant-scale light bulb in an armature on which people can sit, rest and discuss. When a person sits down, a sensor triggers a part of the neon filament inside the acrylic bulb to light up. As more people gather around the bulb the brain shaped neon filament lights up completely.
